Everywriter12/30/2023 With Carver’s work, you can go back and compare the two. Though it’s up for debate whether Carver was that strong of a writer or if Lish’s edits made him into the writer we’ve come to know, it’s interesting to consider how editing a story can change it. I’d be remiss to mention Gordon Lish’s influence over Carver’s work. Known for his sparse prose, Carver’s work has influenced a number of great contemporary writers his understanding of how people communicate is top-notch. Another collection set in the mid-West, it navigates the relationships between men and women who drink, who are down but not yet out, who are trying to communicate what is often difficult or too complex for words. The titular story, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” has been widely read in high schools and colleges, but there’s much more to Carver’s work than this single story. This collection by Raymond Carver doesn’t likely need an introduction. What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Carver It’s a wonderful study of fiction and the human condition. The stories are concerned with the complexities of modern love and the importance of place, and the battles and victories that exist in seemingly harmless places - kitchens, living rooms, cars - in the American West. She examines the tensions between having and wanting her characters try to keep hold of opposing forces in their lives: innocence and experience, risk and stability, fidelity and desire. In Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It, Meloy’s stories carry great emotional power, written in a clean, assured style. Her world feels vibrant and alive the characters full of life.īoth Ways Is the Only Way I Want It by Maile Meloy With a wonderful blend of humor and melancholy, her stories span from a small town in Alaska, the American Southwest, all the way down into South America. She has the uncanny ability to dive into heavier subjects while keeping it just light enough that it’s not repellant. Lucia Berlin’s writing is sharp and poignant. So, to narrow the field a bit, here are 5 short story collections every writer should own.Ī Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia BerlinĪ Manual for Cleaning Women has made its way on to numerous lists, and for good reason. Which books should we pick up and read? Which writers do we feel a kinship with, and whose content most aligns with our interests? Do we read novels? Do we read nonfiction? Short stories? Poetry? The options are seemingly endless. It’s hard to know exactly where to get started. While it might be “simple as that” for some, writers who are just getting started may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of books available to read. Though it is dangerous to buy into it wholly. And to some degree, this naivety can birth greatness. We trick ourselves into believing that what we have to say is the only time it's ever been going to be said, that our words are the most powerful in the world. But many writers may overlook this crucial step in the writing process. ![]() ![]() Writers must read to improve their own work and become more generative with their ideas. In his memoir on craft, On Writing, Stephen King wrote: “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time (or the tools) to write.” Then goes on to declare, “Simple as that.”

Increase chevy volt range12/30/2023 It has been a problem for Volt owners who live in cold climates for a long time. The other big change is an update to the Volt’s automatic engine-assisted heating system, which can now be deferred until the temperature is much lower. Funny enough, GM’s staff on trip were following us in Bolt EVs. ![]() Side note: To be fair, we would have also made the whole trip on electric milage with the Bolt EV without having to charge. Nonetheless, we got more electric miles on this trip than we would have with a previous version of the Volt. To be fair, I wasn’t aiming for efficiency and I driving at a somewhat high speed on the highway for the whole trip back to the hotel. I was able to get about 30 more electric miles on the highway before the engine kicked back on. I paired up with Dan Edmunds, Director of Vehicle Testing at Edmunds, to drive a new black 2019 Volt from Burlington to Waitsfield in Vermont.Īt this point we could’ve drove back on gas, but we stopped for about 3 hours at Ben and Jerry’s, where they installed several level 2 charging stations, and with the new 7.2 kW onbard charger, we were able to get a full charge. Here’s the drive that we did yesterday for example. If you have access to level 2 charging at work or you are often driving relatively long distances with the car, the new charge rate will make a big difference. It comes standard on the ‘Premier trim’ higher-end version, but you will have to pay $750 for it if you want the base Volt.įor people with short commutes who want to just charge on level 1 overnight, it won’t make a difference, but it is worth the money for everyone else. You can see the full list of updates at the bottom of this article and here we will focus on the two most important changes, which have to with charging and the powertrain.įirst off, Chevy is now offering a more powerful charger with twice the capacity: 7.2 kW. GM invited us to Vermont to learn more and try the new version of the Volt, along with the new 2019 Bolt EV, but as we previously reported, the new Bolt EV model doesn’t feature as big of an update as its big brother.Īs for the 2019 Chevy Volt, it is still the second generation Volt first introduced in 2016, but it does feature more significant upgrades with the 2019 model year.Īfter 141,000 cars delivered and more than 2.8 billion EV miles, GM took feedback from their customers to improve the plug-in hybrid. Now with the 2019 model year, Chevy is enabling you to use the battery pack even more with faster charging and less reliance on the engine. ![]() It is enough for most people to cover their daily commute and we often hear about Volt owners not having to fill up their gas tank in months or even years. The Chevy Volt is the exception with its 53 miles of EPA range. At Electrek, we try to focus on all-electric vehicles and not plug-in hybrids because they most often offer only very little electric range.

Light as element12/30/2023 ![]() These associations are commonly borrowed by other groups as well.Ĭeremonial occult systems traditionally depend on systems of correspondences: collections of items that are all associated in some way with the desired goal. The colors used here are those associated with each element by the Golden Dawn. This is generally not the position of those who commonly work with point-down pentagrams, and is often not the position of those associating themselves with point-up pentagrams either. Since then, some have simplified those associations to represent good and evil. A point-up pentagram came to symbolize spirit ruling over the four physical elements, while a point-down pentagram symbolized spirit being subsumed by matter or descending into matter. The issue of a pentagram being point-up or point-down only gained relevance in the 19th-century and has everything to do with the arrangement of elements. The final line between earth and spirit completes the geometric shape. Starting with spirit, the highest element, we descend to fire, then follow the lines of the pentagram over to air, across to water, and down to earth, the lowest and most material of the elements. This hierarchy determines the placement of elements around the pentagram. Traditionally, there is a hierarchy among the elements ranging from the most spiritual and rarefied to the least spiritual and most material. Since at least the Renaissance, one of its associations is with the five elements. The pentagram has represented many diverse meanings over the centuries. Circling clockwise from earth you get water, and then air and then fire, which is the least material of the elements. Earth is the lowest, most material element. That hierarchy can be traced through this diagram. The lower elements in the hierarchy are more material and physical, with the higher elements becoming more spiritual, more rarefied, and less physical. There is traditionally a hierarchy of elements, although some modern schools of thought have abandoned this system. ![]() Water and fire are also opposites and lack the crossbar.Air and earth are opposites and have the crossbar. These opposing elements are on opposite sides of the diagram and are distinguished by the presence or absence of the crossbar within the triangle: Unlike the warm and cold qualities, moist and dry qualities do not immediately correspond to other concepts.īecause each element shares one of its qualities with one other element, that leaves one element completely unrelated.įor example, air is moist like water and warm like fire, but it has nothing in common with earth. The second pair of qualities is moistness or dryness. Female, cold elements point downward, descending into the earth. Male, warm elements point upward, ascending toward the spiritual realm. The orientation of the triangle is determined by warmth or coldness, male or female. This is a strongly dichotomous system, where male qualities are things like light, warmth, and activity, and female qualities are dark, cold, passive, and receptive. In classical elemental systems, each element has two qualities, and it shares each quality with one other element.Įach element is either warm or cold, and this corresponds with a male or female gender. Each element is connected with aspects in each of these, and it helps correlate their relationship to one another. Some modern systems, such as Wicca, view the elements as equal.īefore we examine the elements themselves, it is important to understand the qualities, orientations, and correspondences that are associated with the elements. In traditional Western occult theory, the elements are hierarchical: Spirit, fire, air, water, and earth-with the first elements being more spiritual and perfect and the last elements being more material and base. Others call it Aether or Quintessence (literally " the fifth element" in Latin). The fifth element, which goes by a variety of names, is more rarefied than the four physical elements. Alchemists eventually associated four triangular symbols to represent these elements. Of these, four were the physical elements-fire, air, water, and earth-of which the entire world is composed. The Greeks proposed the existence of five basic elements.

Dark and light taming food for longhorn12/29/2023 Griffins take quite a lot of arrows to bring down and will struggle to get airborne again as soon as they can. These majestic flying beauties are a must for mount collectors - but be prepared for a fight when you go to train them. For example, the Earth Elemental can be used to construct defenses, while the Fire Elemental can provide heat in colder climates and cook food.Įlemental creatures in the game are Fire and Ice Imps, Dark Ice and Dark Fire Elementals, and Fire, Light, Wind, Ice, Earth and Water Elementals. They can be crafted once you hit Taming Rank 6, but you'll need a core from each of the elements to make one.Įach Elemental can help you out in different ways. You must make sure the Elemental is down to very low health before you start the taming process - otherwise, the soul stone won't work. ElementalsĪll Elementals in Dark and Light can be tamed, but you don't need to use hook arrows and food to win them over. Further information currently not available. Once you have them under your control, they are exceptionally strong and make fantastic siege weapons capable of breaking down all kinds of walls and defenses. They are really aggressive and run pretty quickly so you are going to have to find another way of slowing them down to make sure you get enough arrows into them. ![]() It might come as a surprise, but you can tame Cyclops and even have them as mounts. Bansheeīoars are really easy to tame, but once you have them on the ground and have the food trough in front of them, they will go through food really quickly, so make sure you have enough! Bearsīears can be tamed and can be used as a mount. ![]() The upside of Bargesh is that they can strip fallen creatures of their hides and meat, and they can be a combat or hunter/gatherer mount. Even though they aren't powerful, they are agile and move quickly. Some of the creature information has yet to be revealed online, but this guide will be updated as soon as those details become available.įull List of All Creatures in Dark and Light AlligarsĪn Alligar is Water creature that cannot be tamed. Hyper light drifter controller12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() It's rare for screenshots to do a game justice, but any given still image from the game, taken out of context, just looks remarkable. That world-building is also accomplished thanks to the fact that Hyper Light Drifter is, in no uncertain terms, a massive artistic achievement. Intuiting the lore of this world was rewarding, and got me invested in the game's setting, even though I was certain much of my analysis was probably wildly inaccurate. Every single screen of every area in Hyper Light Drifter has a purpose and a history, from the ancient libraries of the Northern avian scholars to the crystalline weaponry of the Western Forest's bear warriors. And, as a plot development strategy, it absolutely works, thanks in large part to the remarkable amount of environmental storytelling developer Heart Machine has put into the game. That hero is shown to be a capable sword-wielder, but seems to be plagued by some horrible malady that causes them to cough up bright pink blood with troubling frequency.Īny specifics beyond that - where you are, who you are, what happened to this world, what's hunting you - are entirely up to interpretation. Most of the exposition comes from the game's gorgeous opening cutscene, which shows Hyper Light Drifter's caped protagonist surviving some apocalyptic attack on their home world, only to be confronted by towering, dying titans and a shadowy monster that seems to pursue them through the whole game. The UI, map and menus feature arcane symbols and characters of a fictional language. Seriously, none: Dialogue with the NPCs you meet in the game is presented exclusively in pictographs. Here's a fact to set the scene: Other than a handful of tooltips explaining what buttons do what, there are no written words in Hyper Light Drifter. I'm hesitant to break down the backdrop of Hyper Light Drifter, because its plot, setting, characters, history and world-building are so ethereal. Hyper Light Drifter's specifics are entirely up to interpretation Learning how to swing a sword and dodge fatal attacks is easy enough - finding your place in a world that tells you virtually nothing about itself is a far more involving challenge. Its larger, more imposing request is how you have to interpret literally everything else that happens in the game. Progress isn't promised in Hyper Light Drifter it can't be earned by grinding or executing cheap strategies and exploits, only practice, practice, practice.īut the mechanical difficulty, the tense, balletic, close-quarters battles that punctuate your exploration of the game's gorgeous setting, is a relatively small component of what Hyper Light Drifter demands. It tosses roadblock after roadblock at its protagonist with no easy way out. This game would play perfectly with keyboard + mouse (the only downside is the additional time you need to move the mouse to a direction before dodging, but you learn to counteract that by keeping the target very close from your character), if they would simply make the reticle visible both in the snow and in the dark (or more visible in general, it's hard to see a droplet in a gigantic fight) it would play perfectly.Hyper Light Drifter demands things from its players that few games are even willing to request. I've made an emergency landing with a Boeing in a Stadium in Flight Simulator with Kb+m, I know what "not made for kb+m" actually feels like. Otherwise it's not that the game is "made for controller", it's just the dev trying to impose their preference on players. If one small adjustement make the game playable to another control scheme (especially the main control scheme from the platform you're selling to), you do it. ![]() When the only reason your game isn't playable is because you failed to make the reticle visible, you don't get a pass because you put a warning in front of the thing. Yeah, sorry but that's not a valid excuse for me.

United flight status12/29/2023 ![]() ICAO states that the operator (the airline), is responsible for the operational control of its flights and only recognizes dispatch systems using flight dispatchers/flight operations officers as the means to control and supervise flights in Annex 6, Part 1, Chapter 3. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), headquartered in Montreal, is the civil aviation branch of the UN (United Nations). The pan-European European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a requirement mandating the use of such an operational control system It is expected that EASA OPS and EASA FCL will be published in 2006 which will outline EASA's position on the issue as well as any requirements imposed on European airline operators. ![]() Joint Aviation Authorities (JAR) OPS 1 did mandate the use of an operational control system with flight dispatchers/joint responsibility/flight watch. Shared responsibility adds a layer of checks and balances to aircraft operation and greatly improves safety. They are in constant communication with the air crew and could be contacted through phone, radio, and ACARS (aircraft communications and reporting system). ![]() After the release of a flight (in a joint responsibility environment) the dispatcher uses sophisticated software tools to monitor the flight's progress and advises the flight crew of any circumstances that might affect flight safety. Legal requirements known as " 14 CFR part 121" govern dispatch release in the United States. Dispatchers usually share responsibility for the exercise of operational control, which gives them authority to divert, delay or cancel a flight.

Halloween 3 season of the witch12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() You could do a million different stories like that. “The original idea, which I’ve only learned in the last few years from hearing about it at conventions from Tom and the director, was that John Carpenter and the other producers were going to make a ‘Halloween’ movie every year with a different story. It didn’t help that after it, they went back and made ‘Halloween’ IV, V and VI with Michael Myers in them,” Nelkin said. “They probably should have never attached it to the ‘Halloween’ series. Instead, the movie had a stand alone plot that involved a plot to kill children across the country using Halloween masks that contained pieces of a stone stolen from Stonehenge. ![]() That’s awesome.”įans of the movie theorize that the film didn’t do well when it was released in 1982 because it failed to feature Michael Myers. And now, all these fans have resurrected it and really, really like it. It was something in the past, that was forgotten. And now, it’s just kind of weird life happens that way. It was not a film I would even mention when I would roll off credits of things I had done. “It wasn’t even a movie I talked about because I’m not a horror fan and I was doing all these other things. It completely blows us away, because as an actor, you do the movie, it doesn’t do well and you move on. “And now, it has a genuine cult following, which just blows Tom and me away. “I’ve seen my co-star Tom Atkins (really, I was his co-star as he had been in many John Carpenter films) every year for the last 20 years since this film has gotten more and more buzz,” said Nelkin, who the weekend prior to her interview with The Eagle had been signing autographs at Monster Mania-Con in Huntville, Md. “None of us expected anything from it,” Nelkin said.Īnd then, she said, about 20 years ago, the movie started to generate its own buzz.
